Indian Railways to conduct safety audit of some 450 bridges in Mumbai

NEW DELHI, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The state-owned Indian Railways has decided to carry out a safety audit of some 450 bridges in Mumbai after a road overbridge collapsed due to heavy rains in the country's financial capital Mumbai Tuesday morning, injuring five people.

"In the next six months, all the 445 road overbridges, foot overbridges and other bridges going above water pipelines will be inspected and a joint safety audit will be carried out in association with Mumbai's civic body," Indian Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said.

"Based on the findings of the safety audit, rectification of any flaws in these bridges will be taken up by the Railway Ministry on mission mode," he added.

A senior official said Wednesday that the Indian Railways is very concerned over Tuesday's casualties due to bridge collapse in Mumbai and it will soon take all necessary precautions to prevent any such mishap in the future.

The Indian Railways is one of the world's largest train networks, criss-crossing the country from north to south. It operates some 9,000 passenger trains and carries nearly 23 million passengers every day.
