COLOMBO, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan government is planning to transform tourist zones into "zero emission" zones in the future, the country's Ministry of Environment said in a statement on Friday.
The ministry said the government is currently studying the feasibility of promoting electric vehicles in key tourist areas as part of a wider effort to support green tourism. Electric vehicles have already been provided to the Department of National Botanical Gardens to improve visitor transport, the ministry added.
The Ministry said the government is studying the investment needs, infrastructure requirements and practical measures needed to expand the use of electric vehicles in tourist zones.
Tourism is a key foreign income generator for Sri Lanka. ■
