MOSCOW, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Federation Council, or the upper parliament house, said Wednesday it regards the illegitimate use of armed force against Venezuela by states supporting the opposition as aggression.

The use of force will also pose a threat to international peace and security, the Federation Council said in a statement, condemning foreign attempts to interfere in Venezuela's internal affairs.

Russia respects Venezuela's sovereignty and will continue to work with the country's legitimate authorities, it read.

The Council said the Venezuelans can resolve the crisis on their own.

It said Russia has consistently called for the issue to be resolved through international law and the country's own legislative means.

The Russian Federation Council called on the United Nations, foreign parliaments and inter-parliamentary organizations to support peaceful dialogue in the Latin American country.
